One of the quickest things I learned after becoming a new dad was to find ways to simplify. Schedules are now based around feedings and diapers, and grabbing sleep when you can will take priority almost everything else. Keeping things like meals and my schedule a little simpler helps to maximize time with the our new family and keeping stress down.
Simplifying has also been true for my wardrobe the past month as well. I have been living in the Sunday Shorts from Outdoor Voices, but when we have gotten out and about, I have kept things simple with a tee-shirt and jeans. I love the space dyed texture on this calibrate tee. It looks modern and updated but pairs and wears just as easy as any classic tee. I wore it out to run a couple of errands with these newly updated slim straight denim from AG and Nike SB sneaks.
I have also come to appreciate the need for a good bag to haul all of the necessities that come along with a baby. Diapers, wipes, and at least one change of clothes are available at all times, so finding a bag to carry everything is important. I’ve long been a huge fan of Herschel Supply Co. backpacks and picked up this new style as my ‘cool’ diaper bag. Now I don’t have to forfeit all style points to ensure the baby essentials are readily available.
The end of summer is somewhat of a bittersweet time for me. I am always ready for cooler weather, but I miss the laid back attitude, longer days and warmer nights. As this summer draws to a close, Labor Day weekend always feels best when celebrated by the water. Either the lake or the coast, Labor Day is meant to be in and around the water before the cooler temps take hold.
But this year is an exception. We will be skipping the coast in lieu of hanging out with our 3 week old baby at home, and I am more than OK with that. Our newborn daughter is absolutely perfect and the beach isn’t going anywhere. We know that these precious first few weeks are like nothing else and would be happy to celebrate her first birthday on the beach next year.
Since we have decided to stay landlocked, I am posting up in coastal vibes with this lightweight linen printed shirt from Culturata. This navy whale print gives a nod to my love for the beach in well-suited short sleeves (soon be replaced for long) in seasonally appropriate linen. Culturata uses the best materials and whenever I wear a shirt from them, I am always impressed with the quality and comfort. Pair this one with easy denim and loafers, to capture a laid back beach vibe without leaving home.
Back to school shopping as a kid always meant new jeans and new sneakers– the clothing staples that always accompanied school supplies. But I would still say this time of year is the perfect time to switch up and maybe update the sneakers you’ve been wearing everyday this summer.
Suede textures and cool colors are great subtle shifts as we head into fall dressing and these simple but unique details will help you transition your style. I’m especially loving these Nike Skateboarding Sneakers as well as the TCG High Tops — both perfectly casual but suited for almost anything. Pair any of these with your new ‘back to school’ denim and you are ready to kick off a new year.
So we are coming down to the final days of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, which is always the best way to cop new fall merchandise at discounted prices. This is always the time that I like to stock up, and Nordstrom did a great job of including pieces to wear now as well as great fall staples for later. Staying pretty true to myself, I picked up items in my classic color scheme of navys, greys, and blacks knowing these are the exact colors I constantly reach for and tend to fit in perfectly with what I already own.
When good denim is on sale, it is always smart to stock up, especially if you have a brand or fit that is your go to. For me, that is the Rag & Bone Fit 2 — the slim fit and rise have been perfected to be the most comfortable jeans that I own. So, I picked up two pair of the Fit 2 in both blue and black. The denim is soft, but not worn and both colors can be worn all year. I also grabbed this pair from Naked and Famous that has more of a selvedge feel, which will be perfect to break in over the next year.
Definitely items that you will buy for the future, but snagging cold weather pieces at markdown prices right now is a smart move to be prepared for that first cold snap. This jacket from Billy Reid was a perfect addition to pretty much anything I will be wearing this fall. The easy color and contrasting leather collar gives a nice elevated feel and has great weight (not too heavy) –perfect with denim and a lightweight sweater later this fall. I also grabbed this bomber from Topman that added a modern nod to camo, but without feeling like I am on a hunting trip. The bomber has been the go-to jacket, and this one has just the right amount of edge for great layering.
I am always on the search for a new pair of sneakers, and when I saw these Vans Old Skool in blue suede I knew I would wear them a ton this fall. The modern color on this classic skate shoe feels completely different from the traditional black and white and also feels a little less casual.
I also grabbed these textured black leather high tops from TCG. I have a couple other shoes from TCG and love their design and material choices — they hold up great and always look super sharp. Plus, I love the modern feel of the grey midsoles here– still a contrast to the uppers, but not as stark as classic white. AND, if you’re adding to your sneaker collection, this is also the perfect time to pick up a shoe tree to help your new shoes keep their shape. These cedar shoe trees help reduce creasing after wear and also reduce moisture and odor.
Long gone are the days where office attire is strictly a white button down with navy blazer, and even though I don’t go into an office everyday, I still like to put in the effort. Knitwear, like a polo or henley, can be a great option for work. Worn under a blazer or with slacks, good knits can help give some style to your every day wear (These are also the shirts that I tend to wear off duty as well). Vince and Rag & Bone tend to be my go to for these pieces, and the sale offerings here are great. I love that both brands keep things simple, but truly pay attention to the fit and fabric details. I also picked up this Billy Reid henley, which has a great fit and looks sharp.
The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is only through this coming Sunday, August 6, and prices will go up Monday. Do you future self a favor and pick up some fall merch on discount… and maybe some things for now too.
